You’re ready for longer, fuller hair. You’ve set your sights on extensions. But the real question is: which type actually lasts the longest?

At Lockerbie Lock, we’ve installed hundreds of sets of extensions—from subtle volume boosts to full-blown hair transformations—and here’s what we can tell you: not all extensions are created equal, especially when it comes to longevity.

So, if you’re wondering which extensions go the distance without compromising your natural hair, this post is for you. Let’s break it down 👇

🪡 1. Keratin Bond (Fusion) Extensions – The Long-Haul Winner

Lifespan: 3 to 5 months

These are the MVPs of long-lasting extensions. Individual strands are attached using keratin protein bonds that are heat-fused to your natural hair. The result? Seamless movement and a super-natural look.

Why they last:

  • They’re bonded close to the scalp

  • No tape or sewing involved

  • They grow out naturally with your hair

💡 Best for: Clients who want long-term wear with little daily maintenance.

📌 Note: You can’t reuse them, but they hold beautifully through washing, workouts, and styling.

📏 2. Hand-Tied Extensions – Reusable & Durable

Lifespan: Up to 12 months with regular maintenance

Installed by sewing hand-tied wefts onto a row of small beads along your scalp, this method is great for adding both length and fullness with natural blend and strong hold.

Why they last:

  • High-quality hair that can be reused

  • Minimal stress on your natural hair

  • Can be moved up every 8–10 weeks

💡 Best for: Medium to thick hair and anyone committed to maintenance appointments.

📎 3. Tape-In Extensions – Quick & Reusable

Lifespan: 6–8 weeks per installation, reusable up to a year

These are fast to install and great for a natural look. The wefts are secured with medical-grade adhesive and are nearly invisible when installed properly.

Why they last:

  • Easy to maintain and reposition

  • Can be reused 3–4 times with proper care

  • Lightweight and gentle on fine hair

💡 Best for: Clients looking for semi-permanent length or volume with minimal damage.

🧷 4. Clip-In Extensions – Temporary but Long-Term Use

Lifespan: Up to 1 year (with occasional wear)

Clip-ins are not permanent—they’re meant to be applied and removed as needed. But if you care for them well, they can last the longest of all types in terms of total shelf life.

Why they last:

  • No chemical or heat application

  • Only worn occasionally

  • Easy to store and maintain

💡 Best for: Special occasions, photo shoots, or commitment-free styling.

🧠 So... Which One Should You Get?

If "longest lasting" means fewest trips to the salon, keratin bond extensions are your best bet.

If "long-term investment" means you want to reuse the same hair over time, hand-tied or tape-ins are smart choices.

But if you want flexibility and low-commitment, clip-ins are your go-to.
